Quality vs. Size

Often, customers are brought to the assumption that the larger the diamond, the more it costs, which isn’t always the case. A diamond’s size alone does not determine its value. The quality of the diamond is just as important. For example, let’s compare two stones. The first is a GIA certified J in color, I1 in clarity, round brilliant cut diamond weighing 1.25 ct. The other stone is also a GIA certified round brilliant cut diamond, but it weighs .97 ct., and is D in color and VVS1 in clarity. The smaller, better quality stone would be more costly. Sometimes, though, a customer may be torn between two stones very similar in color and clarity, but different in size. The better choice in this case may be going with the bigger look. Therefore, the question of quality vs. size isn’t always clear-cut.  So buyer beware “The bigger the better,” isn’t necessarily true if quality is being compromised.
